WEST April Design Challenge Results

The theme for the WEST Design Challenge for April was "April Showers bring May Flowers." I think WEST members were thinking it really was "Will snow in April bring flowers in May?" as we braved the endless snow and continued to wait for spring. I guess all the snow kept members creative juices flowing while we stayed warm inside!
Here are all of this month's entries, in order of submission. This month we are doing something different--we're adding a poll at the end of this post for you to VOTE for your favourite submission! The poll will be open for one week, and the winner will receive a special spot of recognition on the blog for one month!

Puzzle Piece Flower Pendant - Rainbow - Chainmaille Inspired Jewelry by DragonNerd

Shaunna of DragonNerd notes: This is a collaboration between Mike and I - I saw some chainmaille flowers and thought - hey that would be cool with puzzle pieces! Also - chainmaille is hard. I have a new admiration for people who make it! :)

Adjustable Chainmaille Necklace

(Japanese Lace with Austrian Crystal accent)

18k Gold Plated Nickel Free by DarlingRing

Jamie Lee of DarlingRing shares: I chose an adjustable collar length or princess length Japanese lace chain maille necklace using mobius clusters. That was the easy decision, since Japanese lace if done properly can look like a series of flowers and mobius clusters themselves resemble little roses.

Then, to make the showers I added 2-2 chains and accented with light and dark blue AB Austrian crystals and added tiny jingle chains to the bottom to add a "tinkle-y" noise when you move. As a center focal I added an anodized aluminum mirror finish scale with a bright blue anodized aluminum scale that rests gently in the center of the collar bone.

Lilac artisan soap by SoGaSoap

Of her process, Louise of SoGaSoap notes: Very simple, really - sick of the snow snow snow!!! and want Spring to come  ♥

Spring Yarn Wreath. Charcoal Grey, Raspberry Pink, Purple, Aqua Blue,

and Yellow Felt Flowers. Spring home decor, May Flowers by HeartfeltYarnWreaths

Katie of HeartfeltYarnWreaths says: I wanted something to represent both the pretty greys of Winter and early Spring, and also the rich, vibrant colours of Spring. This Spring Yarn Wreath has a rich, charcoal grey neutral base. It then comes to life with rich, vibrant coloured flowers in lemon yellow, raspberry pink, grape purple and aqua blue. A lush assortment of flowers blooms across nearly half of the 12 inch wreath. Say hello to Spring!

Floral Toffee or Biscuit Tin With Plastic Handle Robin's Egg Blue

or Aqua With Pink Roses White Fleur De Lis by BitchinKitschKitchen

Lisa of BitchinKitschKitchen thought of Spring when she saw this tin and figured it would be a good entry in the challenge. Here's hoping Spring comes soon!

Tibetan Silver Flower Necklace with Pink Agate Onyx and Double Chain by KristasJewellery

Krista of KristasJewellery notes: Once I read the theme I immediately thought of this Tibetan silver flower charm. I love its design! I paired it with a matching chain and pink agate onyx stones. Pink always reminds me of spring and summer. I thought this fun necklace would be perfect for a warm spring day!

12 Month Pretty Pink Knitted Skirt for Baby by Magination

Marlene of Magination shares: The variegated yarn makes the little green and pink bits look like little flowers. Hoping that spring will soon arrive!

Rose Gold Tear Drop Shaped Bangles- Three bangles made with Red Brass by aeliosdesign

Kat from aeliosdesign notes: I took the theme quite literally. "April showers bring May flowers" - each individual bangle is a rain drop; when you stack them together on your wrist they form a flower.

Aren't these fabulous entries? Now here's your chance to vote for your favourite:

The poll will close in one week, on Friday, April 26, at 7:00pm. The winner will receive the honour of a little feature spot on the blog sidebar for one month.

Poll is closed. The winner is HeartfeltYarnWreaths' Spring Yarn Wreath with 42% of the votes!

Heat n' Bond Tutorial

Hullo, everyone! Caitlin of Real Swanky here, with a quick & simple tutorial on how to use Heat n' Bond for your applique projects.

You will need:
Heat n' Bond -- Ultra Light or Feather Light can later be sewn over with your sewing machine. Ultra-Hold will gum up your sewing machine needle, so is only recommended if you don't plan to sew over afterward.
Fabric to iron your applique on (a shirt, skirt, etc)
Fabric for your applique
Iron
Scissors
Sewing machine, optional

To begin, flip your fabric so the wrong side is facing up. Cut your Heat n' Bond smaller than your fabric, as you will be ironing the entire piece of Heat n' Bond on top of your fabric.

Leave the waxy, peel-off paper on your Heat n' Bond. Iron the bumpy side of Heat n' Bond onto the wrong side of your fabric. Don't move the iron about too much whilst ironing!

Next, trace a pattern onto the Heat n' Bond and cut out. Note: if you're appliqueing a letter or image that needs to face a certain direction, trace it backwards on the smooth, waxy side of your Heat n' Bond. A heart, letter T, etc will be fine to trace "as is"!

Cut out your design.

Carefully peel the waxy side of the Heat n' Bond off, and discard. Now, the wrong side of your fabric will be shiny, which is the adhesive that has transferred onto it.

Place the shiny (wrong) side of your fabric onto the right side of your selected fabric.
Now pieces of the fabric will be "right" side up!

Iron, being mindful not to move the iron too much, or the adhesive will budge on you!

Done!

At this point you may leave your applique as is (preferred, if using Ultra Hold) or if using the Lite, you may hand stitch around the perimeter, or use your sewing machine's zig-zag option.

Heat n' Bond is sold in packages or by the meter. My favourite place to buy Heat n' Bond is Mitchell's Fabrics on 637 Main Street, Winnipeg. It runs for $3.50-$4.50/m right now. When sold by the meter, it will normally come with instructions on the smooth side. While sold in packages, instructions are normally on the back of the package. Be sure to roll your Heat n' Bond, and not crumple or fold it!

Who's New Tuesday: Rag Quilts and More

Happy Tuesday everyone! Today's WESTie introduction comes from Patricia Hayes.

Where are you from?
I was born and raised in Winnipeg and we raised our family here too. My husband and I relocated from Winnipeg to the Beausejour area 13 years ago.

What is your Etsy shop called?
Rag Quilts and More

When did you start your Etsy shop?
My Etsy shop opened in January of 2011.

Why did you decide to open an Etsy shop?
It was born out of a newly discovered passion for sewing. I sewed blankets and quilts for each grandchild (they began arriving in 2008). I soon had too many blankets, bibs, quilts, soother clips, etc. My daughter and daughter-in-law shop on Etsy and they introduced me to the Etsy experience. It just made sense to open up a shop of my own.

What do you sell?
I still sew rag quilts but have added a lot of the 'more'! I like to sew aprons, for kids and for adults. I love vintage looking fabrics and styles. I like to make handbags, coin purses, cushion covers and the list goes on.

What is your favorite item to make?
Right now I am enjoying quilting a block of the month sampler quilt (ok...I have two on the go). I am learning new ways of piecing and am loving it! I am also learning to free motion quilt - so much fun!

What are your long-term business goals?
I see my projects and 'creations' and want to share them with people. Etsy gets me out there. And as hard as it is for me to part with some of my best loved creations, selling on Etsy helps me support my fabric addiction!

It's hard for me to think in terms of goals for my shop. I want to grow it. I have so many projects here in my studio (my studio doubles as a kitchen) that haven't found their way into the shop. I want to keep creating and sharing my creations. I want to meet other Etsy 'vendors'...and I love shopping on Etsy too!

Make sure you follow along with Patricia on her Facebook page!

Who's New Tuesday: Emms Pocket Shop

This Tuesday we welcome Emily to the WEST team!  Let's learn a bit about her shop...

Where are you from?
Winnipeg

What is your shop name?
Emms Pocket Shop

When did you start your Etsy shop?
Summer 2011

Why did you decide to start an Etsy shop?
My Pocket Shop is my second shop on Etsy.  I started with a jewelry shop, emms gEM's, and then I decided to add sewing to my portfolio because there are so many great fabrics available.  For me, beads and fabric are a lot alike; You can mix and match textures, patterns and colors!  As a seller and buyer on Etsy for over 4 years, I've seen a lot and have picked up bags of inspiration.

What do you sell?
I sell little bags made from fun and colorful fabrics: reusable snack and sandwich bags, change wallets and coupon keepers.

What is your favorite item to make?
I like to make my zipper pockets because I get to match a zipper to the fabric.  Sounds silly I'm sure, but rifling through my tin of zippers is fun!

Want to follow Emily?  Here's how:
