We held our latest team meeting at Joe Black Coffee Bar across from The Park on Portage Avenue.
As they had done in the past, the lovely folks there reserved an area for us so we had lots of space to gather and chat!

What we are planning is not quite ready for show and tell yet... but we sure had a blast brainstorming ideas and sharing inspiration!

The group was so excited about our idea!

I hope to see even more Westies out for the next meeting in March!

W.E.S.T. January Design Challenge Results

The W.E.S.T. January Design Challenge was "The Colour of Love." Members were invited to create something inspired by thoughts of love (positive or negative!). I think we set a record with this challenge, as we have EIGHT entries!

The first entry was from Katie of Hearthfelt Yarn Wreaths:

This anatomic heart is a one of a kind embroidery hoop art made by hand in a gorgeous rainbow-like chevron cotton fabric and stretched in a wooden hoop. The message of this piece is that love has no colour, therefore, the colour of love are all colours together.

WESTies Go Thrifting!

We made out like bandits!
Today I went thrifting with 2 gals from WEST (Etsy team).
Louise (left) and Deb and I had a blast! Check out their haul. Louise found housewares and display items and Deb found fabric, fabric, fabric!

We laughed at oldies we found at the MCC thrift store on Sargent.

Admired many wonderful vintage finds at Ruby Slipper on Sargent. found more goodies at Value Village on Ellice and the furniture thrift on Keewatin and had time to pop into Gale's Wholesale on route 90!

Here's my haul! For under $20 I found a vintage sewing basket, lots of notions and buttons, clip on earrings and lots of other odds and ends including 2 more pieces for my pyrex collection.

I had so much fun! Thrifting with like minded gals was such a blast! Join me next time!

Store Makeover Part 1 - Tags

Sage and Olivia run by Simone and Cara has agreed to let me use their shop for a makeover/ tutorial lessons. SageandOlivia sells jewelry made from semi-precious gemstones such as coral, agate, turquoise and onyx. Their shop has great pictures of the products, and they have a great mannequin for the necklaces (I am actually jealous of the nice texture on it). Here is the shop home page for you to see:

As you can see they have a lot of great products: bold and colourful necklaces and bracelets plus a few earrings. Now they have a few sales and in January have been adding lots of products, but they not getting a lot of hits to their pages. Why? I think one reason is their tags.

Let's look at one of their new items:

This is a great piece; the pictures are clean and well merchandised. They only thing I would add is a shot with a size comparison, like place the necklace beside a quarter so people can gauge the bead size.

If I were looking for an item like this, how would I describe it?

Bold

Chunky

Asymmetrical

Statement piece

Mixed Metal

Black and White

Red Coral

Let look at their tags:

hmmm, Sageandolivia tags are correct, but I do not think they describe their necklace as well as they could.

The next step is to search Etsy for similar products to yours to see what tags others are using. I entered "Statement necklace" into the search bar and this what happened.

Options popped up underneath with the most common searches on esty connected to what you started to type. I selected the "chunky statement necklace" and found:

Bingo - this more like what SageandOlivia is doing!!! I then looked at these items to glean other ideas for tags. If you click on the tag - it will show all the items with that tag. If it looks like your type of product write it down. I have a list taped to my computer of what tags to use.

There are two important things that I want to share with you about labeling/tagging your items (taken from the Do and Don't section on Etsy Help: http://www.etsy.com/help/article/483).

You may use a short descriptive phrase as a tag if it accurately describes your item (for example: "sterling silver," "messenger bag," "steampunk cufflinks").
You may not stuff multiple words into a single tag that do not comprise a descriptive phrase (for example: "beach water sunset," "handbag purse clutch," "green red blue black."

Previously you were not to put multiple words in a tag but that changed when relevancy became the default search. So now you can use terms like:

Statement Necklace

Vintage plate

Children's toque

So if I were to change SageandOlivia's Tags for this item I would use:

Another thing I would do to SageandOlivia's Shop is add more categories to the shop settings (not more types of items). Since they only have three catergories right now - I would put all the bold chunky statement necklaces in one category and all the long or fine chains in another category. This well help the customer find more of the similar products in their shop quicker. If they come and look at one Statement necklace, they might like to see your other options.

Have you ever fallen head over heels for something while browsing on Etsy, and then you get to know more about the person who makes it and you like even more what you already considered a favourite? That happened to me with Ashlee of Smash Knits, one of our newest and most enthusiastic team members. In this interview we learn where her DIY love comes from and why she decided to open an Etsy store after years in the making. She also describes a day in her handmade life, shares her "I'm not cluttered, I'm creative" motto with us and much more! Enjoy...

How did your love for DIY got started?

I am a "hands-on, hands-dirty" kind of girl, through and through. Ever since I was little, I’ve been surrounded by crafts and DIY hobbies. Growing up, my Mum was constantly making something, be it sewing, knitting, baking, ceramics and beyond. My Dad was handy around the house, doing construction and some small building projects, and those traits have certainly been passed on to me! As I got older, I came to appreciate the sense of accomplishment I'd get after I finished making something. And I won't lie: being a true Winnipegger at heart, saving a few bucks along the way never hurt either!

Why did you open an Etsy store?

After a few years of knitting and sewing up a storm, I started to build a little bit of a stash and wasn't sure what to do with everything. I couldn't validate just making a bunch of items without an intended recipient. At the urging of friends and family, I decided to start selling some of my items. I created my shop on Etsy in late 2009, however I didn’t list my first item until November 2011 due to life getting in the way. So it has been a few years in the making! I love everything that Etsy has to offer; the variety & creativity continues to awe me on a daily basis. I'm so happy to be able to be a part of such a fantastic movement!

Which are your favourite tools to work with?

I tend to have a little bit of crafting ADD, so my favourite tools vary from week to week. One thing that is constant: I LOVE working with bold, jewel-toned hues, no matter the textile. I recently said farewell to my trusty, vintage industrial Viking sewing machine which has been a dream to sew on... in order to make way for a brand new machine as a result of a fantastic Christmas gift (aaaaah!). I'm certain it will soon become a new favorite :)

Describe a day in your handmade life...

I tend to get a bit cranky if I don't have a little time carved out on a near daily basis to create something. Winter weather is perfect for curling up for an hour (or three!) in front of the TV with one of many needle projects. I'm fortunate enough to have a great room entirely dedicated to sewing & crafting, so I like to spend time in there often, even if it’s just flipping through pattern books … though right now it's a bit of an organizational disaster, shhhh! Without question, I need to have some form of creativity in my day to day life.

What is your favourite item in your shop and why?

Ooooh, what a tough decision. Currently, I love these gigantic & bulky crochet cowls and I'll always love my big bow headbands, especially in yellow.

Long term aspirations for your shop?

I hope to continue to develop a distinct style as I create more pieces for my shop. I plan on adding several knit/crochet accessories specifically for the summer months, so I'm excited to see how those will be received. I'd love to get involved in more local craft markets, and continue to broaden my horizons online. Not to mention, I'm so looking forward to connecting with all of the other local talent on Etsy.

I like crafting because: It's therapeutic - and a lot cheaper than therapy ... well, most of the time :) It allows for so much individuality and self-expression. It's nice to have something to come home to after a day at the office, and I love being able to "get back to the basics" in this high tech, fast paced, go go go go world we live in. It's also an awesome feeling to be able to make things for myself and not have to rely on buying them at a store. As a newer homeowner, my DIY attitude is coming in VERY handy!

Some of the crafts that I make aside from knit/crochet accessories are: I sew clothing, shoulder bags and home decor pieces, knit/crochet any and everything, embroider, dabble with jewelry design, scrapbook, re-upholster and refinish furniture (LOVE Kijiji for this!). I have a pair of leather mukluks that I have been working on with a girlfriend for two winters – sewing leather is tough, but I can’t wait to finish those puppies! My friends like to tease me that my answer to almost everything is "that's so easy, you could make it." While this is certainly an exaggeration, I do like to try to make something before dropping the cash for it. I am plotting a veggie garden for the very first time this spring/summer, so I'm very excited to try my hand at canning in the fall. Also on my list: pottery and screen-printing.

I choose handmade because: Simply put, it's amazing. It’s great being able to make the perfect gift for the special people in my life. There are so many talented artisans out there, and I love the idea of a handmade community, so I try to buy handmade when I can. Why settle for something that millions have when you can find or create something unique and personalized? I also believe in the importance of recycling and upcycling where applicable instead of buying new, and try to incorporate eco-friendly practices into my life. Always room for improvement!

I am currently reading: The Kitchen House by Kathleen Grissom. After reading The Help by Kathryn Stockett when it first came out, I was hungry for more books about this part of history. This book absolutely fits the bill, and I definitely recommend it!

I am currently listening to: King by O.A.R (Of A Revolution). I don’t know what it is, but I really dig the lead singer’s voice and have for years. I always wish for summer when I listen to them. Five more months to go!

I combat creative blocks by: Creative blocks are not an issue for me (knock on wood). Usually, it's quite the opposite: too many projects on my list and not NEARLY enough time!! My hope for 2012 is to work at a more tidy studio; my motto of "I'm not cluttered, I'm creative" is wearing thin with my main man, hehe. Hopefully an organized space will inspire me even more! I do cruise other Etsy shops, Ravelry, Pinterest and Craft Gossip on an almost daily basis to drool over everyone else's creative prowress. Being active or just getting outside for some fresh air is always a nice breather, too.

Today we share our conversation with Katie from HeartfeltYarnWreaths, a true prairie girl who loves coffee and stationary, and makes the most wonderful wreaths and felt flower brooches I have ever seen! Read about why she likes wreaths, what social media had to do with her opening an online shop, a bit about her personal tastes, the work she does within the justice system and a very special surprise for all of you!

When and why did you start making yarn wreaths?

It feels like I've been making yarn wreaths my whole life, but in truth, my very first yarn wreath was made in November 2010. At that time, I had just graduated with my Masters Degree in Occupational Therapy. Upon graduating, I found myself with so much more free time - more than I knew what to do with! In looking through blogs (read: wasting time on the internet), I came across the concept of a yarn wreath. I loved all of the textures and the clean lines of this modern decor idea. I began shopping on Etsy (read: wasting more time on the internet), and finally elected to make a yarn wreath myself.

I set off to Michael's, 40% coupon in hand, picked up some teal yarn and some felt, along with a $5 glue gun. A few hours later, with half charred fingertips from the glue gun burns, I had self-taught myself how to make yarn wreaths.

Fairly pleased with myself (and still wasting time on the internet), I posted a photo of my creation to Facebook. I thought nothing more of it, until I started getting lots of requests for me to make yarn wreaths for others! After a few months of selling locally, I opened up Heartfelt Yarn Wreaths on Etsy.

Why do I make yarn wreaths? It's a wonderful, therapeutic outlet. Wrapping the yarn round and around and around appeals to my perfectionist nature, and I absolutely love dreaming up colour combinations and bringing them to life with felt. I have met so many wonderful people through this little adventure, and love having an outlet for my creativity.

What inspired you to make your modern felt flower brooches?

More of the same! I saw the idea and decided to try it. I already had the felt and the glue gun (and burned fingertips), after all. I also loved the idea of a modern, textured brooch. I also really enjoy the process of cutting out all of the little tiny petals, and watching them come together to create something bold and beautiful!

Your yarn wreaths and brooches are so colourful and unique, what inspires your designs?

Thank you! I love colour. I find inspiration for colour everywhere! More commonly, however, it find I am rather impulsive as I wander down the yarn aisle and come across a beautiful colour. Then, I go home, lay out all of my felt colours (my supplier has 80 different colours to choose from) and play around with all of the tones until I have found a combination that I love! It's a pretty organic, unsophisticated process for me.

I have also really enjoyed blending modern designs with traditional colour palates for popular holidays including Christmas and Valentines Day.

I also recently discovered Design Seeds and love seeking inspiration through the beautiful photographs and colours.

What is your favourite item in your shop and why?

Hmm. Good question! I tend to have different favourites depending on the season. Right now, my favourite is this soft, romantic Valentines Day yarn wreath. A hint of Valentine's day without being too Hallmark-y. :)

Long-term aspirations for your shop?

I would love to expand my product lines! Yarn wreaths will always be my true love, and those will always be a staple in my creative processes. I have more ideas than I have time to make.

I also completed my first winter craft show circuit in November/December 2011 and look forward to exploring the craft show scene further in the coming years.

I like crafting because it's a way to express another part of yourself. I think sometimes we can become so busy with other aspects of our lives that we lose out on the pieces that are sometimes just beneath the surface. For me, dedicating time out to play with my yarn and felt is very important. As a career, I have chosen to follow my passion and work within the justice system with male offenders who have mental illnesses. It's important for me to take time for myself at the end of the day, too!

Some of the crafts that I make aside from my wreaths and brooches include my love of refinishing furniture. I have my garage (well, my husband's garage), filled with half-finished pieces of furniture. I have, however, finished recovering all of the chairs from my vintage dining room set. I absolutely love them! I also love graphic design - designing invitations, posters, etc. I could see myself getting more into card making, too!

I choose handmade for oh-so-many reasons. I love buying handmade gifts for others because it is so much more fun to find an absolutely unique and perfect gift for someone. I also love working with other artists, and love to marvel at the talents of others. Plus, I buy most of my handmade stuff from Etsy, and then get to come home to presents in my mailbox. Fun!

I am currently reading Bossy Pants by Tina Fey. I just love her.

I am currently listening to Coldplay's latest album, Mylo Xyloto. It's also snowing outside, which usually leads to me listening to Sigur Ros.

I combat creative blocks by browsing Etsy, Pinterest, and the internet at large. Inspiration is never far away. Or, I take my little pup Lewis for a brisk walk. He's great at keeping me on my toes, of course!

I know most of us are rushing with last details about our holiday celebrations, and what better time than the pre-Holiday rush to grab a cup of a beverage of choice (hot cocoa for me) and read this interview! Today we talk to Christa from SecretJewelry: she tells us how a day in her life is, some of the things that inspire her and how her mother's text messages inspired one of her creations.

What is the inspiration behind your ear cuffs?

Beads are my main inspiration. Anytime I look through my beads or go into a craft store I am always inspired to try something new, and see what unique designs I can come up with.

What made you start making jewellery?

At a young age I would always make friendship bracelets, but the biggest spark was when I was 12. My older sister (Carla) was into making hemp necklaces; she later showed me how to make them. At the age of 14 I was making rings out of clothes pins and necklaces out of staples and other things from around the house. I slowly grew out of making jewellery, and into making bath bombs and my own make-up. After a little while the spark came back and here I am making jewellery again.

I absolutely adore your rings, how did that idea came about?

Thank you. After quite a bit of trial and error I have successfully figured out how to combine my artsy side with my jewellery. I would have to say my mom was the reason I started making rings. She would always text me and tell me about a beautiful new ring that she just purchased, the type of stones, and the way it shines. I was already making ear cuffs, earrings and pendants, so I asked my self: why not rings? That's how my first hand painted ring was born.

Could you describe a day in your jewellery-maker life?

Every morning starts off the same: I wake up and I spend anywhere from 30 minutes to 4+ hours outside with my Siberian Huskies & Alaskan Malamute. With the right weather conditions they love to pull me around on a kick sled. On occasion we rescue and adopt out northern breed dogs, as well as cats. We also help educate families on preparing how to care for a dog/cat or a puppy/kitten and what they should do before bringing one home. We encourage spay/neutering, but if done right we support ethical breeders. After I get a few things organized in the house I sit down and work on my rings/pendants. It normally takes anywhere from 3-7 days to completely finish one ring/pendant. But the finished result is always worth it. Once I have a few rings curing I will then work on a couple ear cuffs and the odd earring. Once I'm finished with that I take the evening to relax with my husband, or go out to visit friends and family.

What is your favourite item in your shop and why?
Dreaming Blue Ring. The colors stand out to me, it's very eye catching, and nicely blended.

Long term aspirations for SecretJewelry?
I want to spread my wings and fly: to craft shows, other stores and more. I want to continue to expand and continue to learn new crafts and help inspire others and put a smile on someone's face.

I like crafting because... after I finish an item I love the "wow" factor.. where you just sit there and look at that item and you're like.. well.. Wow! Crafting gives my mind a break from the world, it helps relax me, and it's a lot of fun!

Some of the crafts that I make aside from jewellery are... Eyeshadow, Foundation, Face Primer, Nail polish, Bathbombs, Shampoo/conditioners, face masks, nail polish rack/stands, magnets, nail decals... the list goes on and on! LOL

I choose handmade because... I love creativity, and I love to support the creativity of others.

I am currently reading... I'm not sure if I own any books! LOL but I do enjoy reading my subscription to "Wolfdog magazine."

I am currently listening to... Heavy/bassy dubstep, death metal, grindcore, classic rock, and at this moment my husband's video game music.

I combat creative blocks by... working on another craft, or going on a nice long walk in the hills/trees with one of my dogs.

feature Friday: Just the Goods

I had the pleasure of interviewing Milena from Just the Goods who is a Winnipeg-based producer of handmade, natural and affordable skin care products. We had an in-depth conversation about her natural skin care products, a very educational insight on why every day indulgences shouldn't cost the earth or our health, her wonderful product photography tips and a fast Q&A about some of her personal tastes! Enjoy!

Your product is so unique, how did you start making them?

I started making natural skin care products in 2007 in response to three things. First, my partner developed an allergy to petroleum products and we needed to find alternatives. Next, I was troubled to see how natural skin care products were often positioned as luxury goods, and thus unfairly expensive. Third, I was frustrated to learn how many of the brands I was buying were actually owned by corporations that have other brands doing significant environmental harm. Making my own products meant being sure about ingredients while also finding a way to opt out of conventional consumerism. Thanks to positive feedback from friends, I decided to start making my work available on a wider basis =-)

How do you educate others regarding the benefits of your natural skin care products?

I am a fully compliant member of the Compact for Safe Cosmetics, and have recently achieved Champion status, which means that—through an analytical tool developed by scientists affiliated with over 150 better health/environment organizations (i.e. Environmental Working Group)—it has been determined that my ingredient choices are among the best possible. Between 2004 and 2011, over 1500 companies signed with the promise of improving their production practices, but as it turns out, only 321 of us actually fulfilled that commitment.

Talking about the goals of the compact, and it's online service known as the Cosmetics Database (www.ewg.org/skindeep/), has been a great way to engage with people about the nature of ingredients in conventional products, which are selected by corporations for various reasons, including extending shelf life to facilitate the profit-oriented goals of mass production.

With regard to the safety of ingredients versus things like animal testing, I like to explain that our skin is our largest organ, and everything we put onto it ultimately enters our bloodstream, etc. If we're not comfortable with ingredient choices to the extent that we'd need to prove their safety by testing on animals, why would we even want to go there? If we wouldn't want something inside our body (formaldehyde, parabens, artificial colours and fragrances) why would be want it on our bodies?

Fortunately there is more and more information about this issue available to people than ever before, and that's thanks to fantastic health and safety advocates =-).

What is your favourite item in your shop and why?

I'd have to say my favourite item is my toner for oily/combination skin, which has made my complexion better than ever before and to never again smell the harsh stench of what I used to use... what a relief! Ha ha!

Long term aspirations for Just the Goods?

I must be honest in writing that I'm amazed Just the Goods has taken off in all the ways it has because I'm always juggling it with other work and responsibilities, and have never given myself an opportunity to form a “real” promotional or growth plan. That said, I'm excited about the possibility of my products becoming more widely available, but I am being very thoughtful about how this happens as each new opportunity presents itself because I want to maintain my handmade promise as much as I want to ensure my products are truly safer choices.

I like handmade and natural skin care because... it makes a tangible impact on people's lives and the earth itself. By reducing our collective exposure to petrochemicals, we can become healthier and ensure fewer toxins are released into our soil and water. I also like providing an alternative to the mainstream beauty industry that thrives on making people feel poorly about themselves in order to generate profit.

Please give us some photography tips, yours are outstanding!

Thank you for this kind compliment!! Etsy suggests photos be taken with natural sunlight, so I've often worried that mine are too dark and dramatic, but since I don't have access to space with abundant natural light, I've had to make due ;-) I set my products on a non-reflective backdrop, direct incandescent light onto them in an otherwise darkened room, set my camera to the macro (close up) function, and shoot as many photos as possible from different angles, adjusting the light after several takes. I shoot with the highest resolution possible, because it's always easier to shrink down than enlarge. My camera (a rather cheap compact, not a high-grade digital SRL) offers an alignment guide in the viewfinder (like a tic-tac-toe grid), and I use that to make sure the bottles look upright and not tilted. After selecting the best shots, I colour adjust as necessary using a free, open source photo editing software program called The GNU Image Manipulation Program (aka GIMP). I also take this opportunity to crop images, blur dust spots and otherwise remove anything that prevents the image from looking spotless. I've gotten better at this over the years – I'd really like to go back and replace some of my older pics, but I have yet to find the time!

In case you craft asides from producing skin care products tell us what you make... I'm a curator, writer and event organizer, so although my other production activities aren't physical, I do certainly make other sorts of things =-). I would love to take up sewing again... it's been over 10 years since I've made anything.

I choose handmade because... mass production carries with it many of unfortunate consequences, both social and environmental. I feel we need to re-think our sense of needs and wants, and insist that all things be made with care and integrity, as well as ethical production practices.

I am currently reading... a whole bunch of super awesome things! Realizing the Impossible: Art Against Authority edited by Josh MacPhee and Erik Reuland, and Art and Liberation: Collected Papers of Herbert Marcuse edited by Douglas Kellner are the two grabbing my attention the most.

I am currently listening to... so much! Lots of The Raveonettes, Lykke Li, Editors, and New Young Pony Club, but I've also recently discovered Boxer Rebellion, The Cinematics (which broke up not too long ago – sad face!), and The Dead Weather.

I combat creative blocks by... If you can believe it, I actually don't have creative blocks with Just the Goods since the list of products I'm eager to develop is as long as my arm, but I do have energy blocks. When I'm tried in the lab and have deadlines to meet, I pick myself up with aromatherapy – rosemary to refresh and awaken, neroli to lift my spirits, and lavender to stay calm when it seems like there is no way I'll get everything done ;-) A lil' vegan dark chocolate helps, too ;-)

W.E.S.T. November Design Challenge Results

The design challenge for November was based on the Fall 2011 colour trend forecast from Pantone:

Four WESTers took up the challenge with fabulous results! I'm going to start from the last to the first entry with this post.

Just under the wire, Kat from aeliodesign entered this beautiful one of a kind cuff:

OOAK Luxurious Horn Cuff Bronze Metalwork Emberglow Agate Stone set in Sterling Silver by aeliodesign

Kat notes that she had plans to make a necklace for the challenge, but on the last day of the challenge, she just sat down at her bench with some metal and a saw, and this was the result. The cuff itself is "bamboo," with some rippling through it, and the stone is "emberglow."

You can see more of Kat's Original, contemporary & stylish jewelry designs in her shop aeliodesign. When you go there, you will see she is currently living in Greece, but she will be moving back to Winnipeg soon!

Our third entry was based on the colour Quarry:

Modern Elongated Swarovski Crystal Hoops Earrings, Light Denim Blue and Argentium Sterling Silver - Roxie by Toxie Designs

Jennifer says earlier this year she purchased vintage crystal in the colour Indian Sapphire, which she thinks best matches Pantone's Quarry hue. These crystals are in a discontinued shape in a large 10mm size.

Vintage light grey blue faceted crystal saucers floats on an arced earwire which meets at the bottom latch. These sexy earrings, made of Argentium Sterling silver* (anti-tarnish, nickle free and ethically mined) are hand-shaped and hardened by me. The crystals are brilliantly cut vintage saucer beads in pale light denim blue or quarry blue from Swarovski. These are limited edition earrings as only three pairs will be made.

Susana writes:
Ever since I was a child, I've always found moustaches to be absolutely charming - and I don't mean just Clark Gable and John Waters' cooler than cool pencil thin moustaches. My fascination has always included the magical bearded lady of the amusement parks, fairs and circuses of yore, and of course, Groucho Marx's grease moustache and the millions of imitations that followed in the form of "funny guy" masks. While thinking of a calendar idea, something one will see all through the year, I thought: I'd like to see colourful moustaches. It was a huge aid to have this challenge and the Pantone colours available, since I am still a bit scared about colour--hence one of the lines of my manifesto goes "Do not be afraid of colour." This was a perfect chance to run wild with the amazing hues presented. Using the suggested colours was like writing an exquisite corpse: no one knows what the previous verse was or what the following one will be, but somehow, they match beautifully.

I am usually a bit jealous (let's be sincere: very jealous) about those who have the amazing talent of finding treasures wherever they go, from thrift stores to garage sales and beyond. With their keen eye and artistic sensibility they find vintage goodness that most of us would never notice. Lisa from Bitchin' Kitsch 'n' Kitchen is one of those talented vintage hunters and today we talk to her about her passion for vintage, some of her outrageous finds and some of her personal preferences. Enjoy!

Bitchin' Kitsch 'n' Kitchen

Vintage is fascinating, how did you get into it?

I started going to garage sales when I was about 7 years old (in the mid-'70s), and it just sort of grew out of that. I started going to auctions regularly about a year ago, and it just kind of got out of hand :)

Do you have a pre-established notion of what you are looking for when you go on a vintage hunt?

No, I just like the thrill of the hunt! I just like to see whatever catches my eye.

What are the most odd / outrageous / rare finds you've made?

Hmm... I got the world's creepiest doll last week in an auction box. She looks like the child of Chuckie from those old movies about the killer doll. I also found an amazing Bagley Marine bowl for $2 at a yard sale a couple of years ago. Apparently it's worth over $200. It's sitting in my dining room right now.

I like vintage because... so may reasons - it's beautiful, unique, environmentally friendly, well-made, funky, unusual, and on and on...

I choose (to sell) vintage because... if I didn't, my house would collapse. And then they'd call me a hoarder instead of a picker ;)

I am currently reading... Moab is My Washpot by Stephen Fry and A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson. Both are hilarious. I don't usually read more than one book at a time, but I had been on a wait list for Moab from the library, and it just came up.

I am currently listening to... the new Jim Cuddy album, Skyscraper Soul, and God Willing & The Creek Don't Rise by Ray LaMontagne.

What is your favourite item in your shop and why?

Either the anodized bird canisters, because they're beautiful & very unusual, or the Royal Haeger Gazelle lamp, because it's so gorgeous!

Long term aspirations for your shop?

To sell lots, and make some room in my house to display the amazing stuff I want to keep!

Today we talk to Nancy Blokland of Nancy Blokland Pottery about her experience in pottery, what Etsy means to her and she also shares some business advise with us. Enjoy Nancy in her own words:

In pottery all pieces thrown on the wheel must be "centered".

This has been a good metaphor for life.

I have been in the crafting business, primarily selling pottery for more than 25 years. I still continue to learn and try to keep up with emerging trends in finding my pottery “new homes” (read sell). What I have learned is that it is really important to pick your venues both retail/wholesale and sales.

Researching who your client population is, or who you want it to be is key. Is the store/sale I will have my work at a draw for who I think buys my products, or could it lead to future sales. I have found that doing fewer, bigger sales is a better investment of my dollars and time as I can check out the sale the year before, talk to other vendors and have a sense of how I need to set up my booth and what products to take.

When considering venues, I need to be smart about how much packing and carrying of those fragile items I want to do, i.e. The Winnipeg Folk Festival, Handmade village. If my objective is to move product there, it makes no sense to take a lot of teapots or serving dishes, they just won’t move. For a sale like that, where people are walking and carrying things in backpacks, the item needs to be small and well packed. Customers need to know that what they have bought will get home in one piece, literally.

Etsy for me is not moving lots of product, but I enjoy having yet another on-line presence and the spin offs of posting my up to date works for sale on both my blog and Facebook. At 20 cents per item, that is pretty inexpensive advertising. I also get a kick out of having mugs and tumblers go to Texas, England and California.

My favorite item in my shop is my wine tumblers, new, different and easy to ship. This is a serious consideration for a potter.

My long term aspiration is to build up my on line presence and sales and reduce my need for doing so many shows in the fall.

It won't be long before our world in Manitoba will be enveloped in--dare I say it--snow! Soon we will be longing for more colour to brighter our moods and our days. This month's design challenge is based on the Fall 2011 colour trend forecast from Pantone:

Bamboo. Emberglow. Honeysuckle. Phlox. Cedar. Deep Teal. Coffee Liqueur. Nougat. Orchid Hush. Quarry.

Mix and match. Use these colours for inspiration--don't be worried about matching the exact hue! Consider adding texture, contrast and colour in your work: pair masculine with feminine, warm prints with cool metals, include both old and new influences and create an intriguing balance between the colours.

Here's how each design challenge works:
Check the forums and blog at the start of the month to get the inspiration topic. As you mull over what that particular idea means to you, jot down some notes in the discussion thread or leave a comment on the blog. Take pictures of your process and finished item and post them in the forum thread. We would love to hear the story behind how you arrived at your finished object! I will post a separate feature for each item entered into the design challenge with a round up at the end of the month.

A few notes:
Create something new, especially for the challenge. Entries for each month should be finished by the last day of the month. Vintage and supply sellers are welcome to participate too, with a focus on artful photography and careful choice of item.

The design challenge for October was "With a Grateful Heart!"

Thankfulness. Gratitude. We have so much to be grateful for.

Two W.E.S.T. artists came up with some awesome results using this theme as their inspiration.

Our first entry was from Tawny of TawnyBee:

Fingerwoven Set of Friendship Bracelets - Chinese Braid by TawnyBee

Tawny shared that the reason she chose to make these Chinese Braided Bracelets for this month's challenge was because of a quote from the book where she learned how to make this particular braid: "I like to think of it [the Chinese braid] as a closely knit family, the core of dark at the center representing home and parents, the lighter strands, which leave and then return, as children whose lives are separate but still linked." And family is what Tawny is most thankful for.

Take-out or Travel Cup Cozy and Coasters - Christmas set - candy cane stripes by MonCherieCreations

Miriam's item for the Grateful Heart design challenge was a red-and-white striped cup cozy and two "peppermint" coasters. Miriam shared a story of the candy cane (which you can read here) to explain why this item represents her faith, which she is most grateful for.

Sunshine and Daisy Earrings

Using a necklace from a friend's old jewellery stash, I've upcycled these pewter daisies to be the perfect drop beneath yummy butter-yellow howlite rounds.

Because of the pewter daisies, these earrings have a bit of weight to them. If you have sensitive ears, please have a look around my shop for other, lighter earrings ;)

Total length is about 1 1/2".

This coffee sleeve will keep your coffee hot and your fingers cool. It measures 4 in long and will fit most coffee cups. In the picture, it is on a "tall" sized cup and is quite deep.

This cozy is knit from a skein of vintage yarn reclaimed at an estate sale. This coffee sleeve is definitely one of a kind because you can no longer find this yarn or colour. It was made from an Eaton's brand called Vanity Fair and was knit in a basket weave pattern. The orange hues make it a perfect gift for that man in your life who loves his morning cup of java.

wood bird necklace - rainy day

These bird pendants are one of a kind - no two will ever be the same!

This hand-painted wood bird was created with hand-cut pieces of lovely paper decoupaged onto the pendant. It measures 4" across, and is finished with a lovely raindrop shaped silver chain and lobster clasp. This amazing chain measures approximately 18" in length. Feel like dressing it down a little? Flip the necklace the other way and discover and beautifully bronze painted bird.

The pendant has been sealed with a few coats of protective finish, but as with all wood pendants, please keep clear of water.

Take-out or Travel Cup Cozy and Coasters - Christmas set - candy cane stripes by MonCherieCreations

Miriam writes: My item for the Grateful Heart design challenge is a red-and-white striped cup cozy and two "peppermint" coasters. Here's the story of the candy cane to explain why this item represents what I am most grateful for:

A candy maker in Indiana wanted to make a candy that would be a witness, so he made the Christmas Candy Cane. He incorporated several symbols for the birth, ministry, and death of Jesus Christ. He began with a stick of pure white, hard candy: white to symbolize the Virgin Birth and the sinless nature of Jesus, and hard to symbolize the Solid Rock, the Foundation of the Church and firmness of the promises of God. The candy maker made the candy in the form of a "J" to represent the precious name of Jesus, who came to earth as our Savior. It could also represent the staff of the Good Shepherd with which He reaches down into the ditches of the world to lift out the fallen lambs who like all sheep have gone astray. Thinking that the candy was somewhat plain, the candy maker stained it with red stripes.He used three small stripes for the blood shed by Christ on the cross. So that we could have the promise of eternal life.

Covers are made from reclaimed bookboard covered with a vintage atlas map of the world. The endpapers of this journal are vintage atlas index pages--why not recycle all parts of the atlas? Bound with waxed linen thread using a double needle coptic binding leaving a lovely chain stitch on the spine. This allows the book to lie perfectly flat when open. The inside is filled with 256 pages (counting both sides) of hand torn reclaimed computer paper, leaving a soft deckled edge on the bottom. Tractor feed perforations are still intact on each page.

This journal measures 12.5 x 15 cm (5 x 5 .75”).

Feature Friday: PeriwinkleDzyns

It is my pleasure to announce that Feature Friday is back! And what better way to re-start than with our team captain, PeriwinkleDzyns who makes jewellery in the most unique way: "upcycling factory discards into wearable pieces of jewellery". Personally, I truly love her craft, for its uniqueness and ecofriendliness, and she's been a huge mentor for me since I joined the team, so I am sure you will be inspired too after reading the interview!

What made you choose factory discards as the main ingredient of your jewelry?

I had been making jewellery for several years before I stumbled upon a bag of resistors going into the garbage, as they were obsolete technology, at my former day job. I thought they looked pretty. I used them to make myself an ID badge holder and I wore it to work. Around the same time, I had just opened my Etsy shop as a bead jeweller maker, I was looking for something to stand out from the crowd. Discarded electronic parts were definitely it!

Why choose eco-friendly?

It's much more challenging to me than many of the more traditional materials. It really scratches my creative itch to find ways to use the items I salvage.

Please share some advise for eco-friendly artists

Develop your techniques first. You need to start with a strong foundation when you are working outside the box. As a jewelry artist you need to be able to make neat loops, wrap things and work with tiny components consistently. Practise practise practise! Don't be afraid to try techniques or materials in a new way.

What is your favourite item in your shop and why?

Brace Face - Computer Part Pendant, because it shows both my whimsy and my ability to envision materials for what they can be, rather than what they are

Long term aspirations for PeriwinkleDzyns?

So many! To travel to large shows across Canada in a small RV, visiting all the neat shops I sell in, both now and in the future, and have never seen. To make it my full time occupation, to continue to expand my product lines with more items folks consider garbage, to learn additional techniques and to continue to make crafty friends!

I like crafting because... it calms my uptight soul. I can organize it and fiddle with it, all to my hearts content.

Some of the crafts that I make asides from my jewelry are... really varied. I've been crafting for many decades and have tried my hand at too many things to list. But currently besides my jewellery I also love paper crafts, making pinback buttons and helping fellow crafters. whether as the leader of WEST or during lunch time craft sessions with some of my day job co-workers.

I choose handmade because... making, wearing, buying and using handmade things help me to shine out against the sea of same blandness.

I am currently reading... lots and lots of fluff fiction on the lovely Kobo my son gave me for mothers day.

I am currently listening to... classic rock from the Hooters next door as I write this on my lunch hour.

I combat creative blocks by... wouldn't know, have never had one. My brain and my blackberry are full of ideas, thoughts and inspirations. I can never remember a time that I wasn't making something.

And recommend us which WESTer to interview next!

Great Artists Rebound Journal

A new ecofriendly blank journal has been made out of this unwanted 1899 copy of Great Artists, Volume 1: Raphael, Rubens, Murillo and Durer.

This book was lovingly disassembled to allow the book covers to be reglued over the spine edge so there are no raw edges on the covers. Cover endpapers are black and white copies of two of Raphael's paintings, from the original book. Bound with waxed linen thread using a double needle coptic binding leaving a lovely chain stitch on the spine. This allows the book to lie perfectly flat when open. The inside is filled with 160 pages (counting both sides) of reclaimed super smooth white office paper.

Now that we are all back into our fall routines, it's time to take a moment to reflect on the things we are thankful for. October brings Thanksgiving to Canadians, and we have so much to be thankful for. This month's design challenge has the theme "With a Grateful Heart."

The W.E.S.T. Design Challenge for September was Harvest.

And oh my did our talented WEST'ers come up with some beautiful harvest themed items.

We start with Jynxx who was so inspired by the harvest them that she entered two items into the challenge!

Jynxx writes about this one: When I thought of the theme harvest, it right away made me think of the beautiful colors of the season. All the pretty leaves, pumpkins, flowers and the fading sunlight!

Prairie Girl Knits writes: As made obvious by my shop name, I'm totally a prairie girl. I love the idea of a Harvest theme.

A friend of mine received a hand knit hand-me-down hoodie for her kid and absolutely raved about because it zipped up in the back. She found it so easy to put on & take off of a squirmy kid. I was inspired by the idea and, also inspired by the Harvest theme of September's challenge, I set off to see if I could morph my baby sweaters into a zipper-in-the back awesome hoodie.

In honour of the Harvest theme, used the Deep Straw coloured sweater and added a knit hood which is open in the back and front.

Today we feature the second entry into the Harvest Design Challenge.

Harvest Round Coiled Mat by Prairie Threads

These eco-friendly coiled mats use up bits and pieces of leftover fabric--this one includes a blend of warm fall coloured fabrics, all cotton. To make each one, I wrap strips of fabric around cording, then coil it and stitch it together. Each one is unique and fun!

You can use them:
• under a hot dish
• as a mug rug
• with a flower arrangement
• under a plant
• for teacher or hostess gifts
• as a hat (my daughter's idea!)

Finished size: approximately 20 cm (7.75") diameter

Here is a one-of-a-kind autumn charm bracelet that I call "AUTUMN SPLENDOR" This bracelet is the perfect accessory for any fall wardrobe. It has all the wonderful colors of fall sunflowers, leaves, pumpkins and wildlowers.

Feature Friday: Nancy Blokland Pottery

I am Nancy Blokland of Nancy Blokland Pottery, a passionate potter and mom. I have been fascinated with clay since my first opportunity when I was 12 years old with a creative junior high teacher. When I decided to go into the helping professions, I heard about “burn out” and thought the creative process of making functional pottery would be a good balance to dealing with people’s difficulties and sadness. I was right. Almost thirty years later I am still working with people and at nights, weekends, or spare moments my motto is Muddy Mama.

I am inspired by colours, leaves in the garden and how I can incorporate them, and the endless possibilities of the clay. I consider it an honour to make functional pottery that people use in their daily meals and their celebrations. Food and how it is served is important to me. All my glazes are food safe, and my work is dishwasher, microwave and oven safe. Every mug and teapot are made and later purchased with lots of thought and attention to detail.

I have developed a blog, as a running journal of trying to balance all my passions at NancyBloklandPottery@blogspot.com and am on Facebook as NancyBloklandPottery. I sell in a variety of venues around Manitoba, the Craft Cupboard, Dalnavert Museum, Savoir Faire on Henderson Hwy, the Pembina Hills Art Gallery in Morden, Manitoba. I enjoy meeting with customers live and in person so I participate in Scattered Seeds and other shows such as the Vineyard Sale and the Pineridge Hollow Farmer’s Market. Hi, I'm Jen AKA: Mrs. Glockenheimen :))

Creating jewellery has been a passion of mine ever since I was a kid. I am drawn to the magic and timeless esthetic of vintage pieces and I particularly adore children's book illustrations for their whimsical and innocent character. Why should these fabulous books sit on shelves...when you can showcase them everyday?! The jewellery that I create from these books are one-of-a-kind, hand-made, nostalgic, quirky and often embellished with glitter, a personal favourite!

Now that everybody has gotten their kids back to school (or in the process of doing so) and we're all getting back to thoughts of the upcoming holiday season, cooler weather, and pumpkin spice lattes - I thought that we needed an autumn theme for the next design challenge.

Harvest.

Here's how it works. Check the forums and blog at the start of the month to get the inspiration topic. As you mull over what that particular idea means to you, jot down some notes in the discussion thread or leave a comment on the blog. Take pictures of your process and finished item and post them in the forum thread. We would love to hear the story behind how you arrived at your finished object!

I will post a separate feature for each item entered into the design challenge with a round up at the end of the month.

A few notes: Create something especially for the challenge. Entries for each month should be finished by the last day of the month. Vintage and supply sellers are welcome to participate, too, with a focus on artful photography and careful choice of item.
