Make it Monday - Mirror Upcycle

As captain of WEST I get to do lots of wonderful things! Today I get to introduce a new feature on our blog, Make it Monday. When ever possible on a Monday, a WESTie will be sharing a how-to, tutorial or make it with you our wonderful readers.

This post was originally featured on my personal blog PeriwinkleDzyns and is a part of a bathroom renovation that we just completed.

While I wait for the flooring and vanity to be installed I've been working on a little project of my own: a mirror redo.

K2 and I found this great vintage mirror at a local antique mall, slightly overpriced but the size was perfect. You don't need much for this project, just a mirror, spray paint, spray finish, vinegar, newspaper, painter's tape and a large piece of cardboard for a work surface.

Clean all the surfaces with soap and water then give it a wipe with vinegar to remove any posible greasiness.

Tape off the mirror well, really well! Take the time to press the tape under the edges of the frame and make sure none of it overlaps onto the mirror frame. Certain mirrors you can take apart and then spray with abandon. With this one, the mirror was glued in and I didn't want to take the chance of breaking it by trying to remove it, after I overspent on it at the antique mall..... I'm usually far more cavalier with thrifted items.

Prep your work surface.

Spray lightly and evenly, with lots of coats! It's better to be too thin than to get runs. I usually wait 15 minutes between each coat - leaving it too long can cause crackling, and not in a good way. For the final 2 coats I used a clear spray.

Check out how my bathroom turned out!

I hope this project has you itching for more, because WEST is full of talent and we love to share it with you.

  1. Such a great project! We actually did it too 7 years ago when we built our home and just couldn't find a mirror that we liked for our master bath. I found a hideous mirror from winners super discounted to $9! sprayed it and accented it with white and now it looks amazing! I also use this same mirror at craft sales to display my jewelry - its double bang for your buck!
