Foodie Friday: Who needs butter, am I right!?!

I have very fond memories from my childhood of my Ma making us popcorn on the stove top and that distinct smell and sound of the kernels being swished around in the oil as she furiously shook the pot. And the butter. Oh the butter. Well, times and tastes have changed a bit for me but I do still crave that fluffy treat now and again.

This time though I bust out the thrift store score air popper, some organic popcorn kernels (found at the lovely Vita Health Fresh Market) and some new toppings that leave out the cow but include an all new, vegan deliciousness. Coconut oil. Seriously, what CAN'T this wonder oil do!?! I've got some in almost every room in my house, so why not put it on my popcorn, too? This recipe is easy peasie but also allows you all kinds of freedom with options for seasoning beyond the coconut oil. One thing to keep in mind though: a little goes a long way. So, pop up that organic popcorn in your air popper or pot on the stove using, you guessed it, coconut oil and set it aside in a big bowl.

Now the REAL fun begins! Bust out a small pot and scoop about 1/8th of a cup or so of coconut oil into the pot to melt, depending on how much popcorn you popped. If it's warm where you are, chances are your coconut oil is already in liquid form but if it's not, melt it until it's clear. Drizzle over your popcorn and shake it like a Polaroid picture to coat the fluffs of popcorn goodness.

Then bust out your spice rack! My personal favorite is a pinch of Himalayan salt and a good dose of organic real cinnamon. A bit of sweet and a bit of savory. Another great spice to add is cayenne pepper which I can never get enough of. Just be sure to go easy as it adds a good lot of heat if you over-do it. Some other great combos to try: Turmuric. Curry Powder. Herbamare Organic Seasoning Salt. Basil and Oregano. Cinnamon and Nutmeg. Melt a bit of local honey or maple syrup with the coconut oil and drizzle. The options are really limitless! A few weeks ago I scooted down to Osborne Village during the lunch hour to restock my very empty display at Sew Dandee. What's that you ask? Well, besides being an awesome place to sell my geekery, it's also a haven of handmade goodness!

Sew Dandee is located in the heart of Winnipeg's Osborne Village at 105 Osborne.

The owner is the lovely and talented Andee Penner. Just look at her, all hard at work and everything!

In an economy where independent creative shops are closing down all across the continent, Sew Dandee continues to thrive while it supports local artisans!

Sew Dandee carries the creative work of many local designers and artisans,Just the Goods skin care, creatures from Marathon1981 and so many others!

Whether you are looking for accessories or clothing Sew Dandee carries a large variety of interesting and unusual pieces. An eclectic mix of items handmade by Andee herself (my K2 loves her head bands!)and a constantly changing variety of artistic output, it's a must stop on my shopping list year round!

Scott Pilgrim vs The World Light Switch Plate by Dandee

All of my switch plates are made using a solid, plastic switch plate.

I use an adhesive backed paper to print the images onto. The image is then applied to the switch plate and then covered with two layers of decopodge and then a layer of varnish. This allows for cleaning with a damp cloth if needed.

I don't send screws but you can use the ones on your existing switch plate. If you need screws, let me know and I'll send a couple for you.

I can also do large toggles, outlet covers and double and triple switch plates. Just convo me for details!

Clothing Swap at Sew Dandee!

It's that time again for a Sew Dandee Clothing Swap! And what better time than Spring to clean out and freshen up your wardrobe!?

Bring AT LEAST 10 items of somewhat current clothing or footwear in good, freshly washed conditon (NO stains, holes, pilling etc.) along with $15 to Sew Dandee before April 23rd and you'll then be entitled to all the awesome new-to-you clothing and shoes your heart desires!

In addition to the swapped clothes, I'll have a sale on all the Sew Dandee Gently worn clothing.

Items left over at the end of the night will be reworked into new items for the store, donated to a local women's shelter or you may be able to put them on consignment here at Sew Dandee for store credit. No matter what, they'll all find a good home.

Items can be dropped off at the store between 10am and 6pm Monday to Friday before April 23rd. Please don't show up the night of the swap with a bin of stuff. Register and get your stuff in to me by April 23rd so I can have them all nicely organized for you to parouse the night of the swap.
