May-June Design Challenge Results

The theme for the WEST Design Challenge for May/June was "Show Your Canadian Colours." While the number of submissions was smaller this month, our Canadian pride still shines through!

Here are all of this month's entries, in order of submission. Once again this month we are adding a poll at the end of this post for you to VOTE for your favourite submission! The poll will be open for one week, and the winner will receive a special spot of recognition on the blog for one month!

Lisa, from BitchinKitschKitchen, found a great vintage bar towel for this challenge:

Katie, from HeartfeltYarnWreaths, writes: I was born and raised in Canada and am so thankful to live in this beautiful country. This wreath was inspired by the iconic Canadian flag, and is complete with a hand-cut felt maple left. The 12 inch wreath is wrapped in alternating bands of crisp white and rich red yarn, and comes ready to hang. Great to celebrate Canada day, or hang it year round to show your Canadian pride!

Laura, from PrairieThreads, found some fabric in her stash that was actually printed with an American flag. She took the red and white striped parts and made it Canadian in this fabric coiled mat:

Ruth, from PeriwinkleDzyns submitted this necklace made from recycled leather and hardware:

And now here's your chance to vote for your favourite:

The poll will close in one week, on Monday, June 17, at 9:00am. The winner will receive the honour of a little feature spot on the blog sidebar for one month.

WEST May-June Design Challenge: Show Your Canadian Colours!

You asked for another design challenge, so here it is!

I'm posting the theme/inspiration here on the blog and also in our team discussion forum on Etsy. Your job is to take that inspiration in whatever direction your imagination leads. The goal is to challenge yourself, be inspired and enjoy the creative process!

As you think about the theme, add comments to the discussion thread on Etsy about your process. Take pictures of your process and the finished item and post them in the discussion thread when you are done. It's interesting and inspiring to others to hear the story about how you arrived at your finished product, so please share at least a comment about your process! I will post the results of the challenge after the deadline. If we get enough items, I'll make a treasury including all the items!

And now on to the current challenge! The theme for the next month is "Show Your Canadian Colours!" Think red or white or red and white together. The deadline for this challenge is four weeks (one month) from today, June 8, with the results being posted on Monday June 10. When the results are posted, you will be allowed to vote for your favourite entry. The winner will be featured on the blog side bar for one month.

A few notes:
Create something new, especially for the challenge. Entries for each challenge must be finished by the posted deadline. Vintage and supply sellers are welcome to participate too, with a focus on artful photography and careful choice of item.

Happy designing! I hope this inspires you, and I can't wait to see what you'll come up with, so come on, let's get creative!

Oh Canada! Maple Leaf Pendant

I love working with leaves in clay.  Sometimes, I have to grow the leaves, wild Harvest (liberate, steal) the leaves, but am currently working on Maple Leaves for what I hope will be the onslaught of tourist consumers to Winnipeg and Manitoba that need "Canadiana".  Sometimes stamps have to work in a pinch and a combination will be used for these new pendants I am adding to my show stock, good to have those portable items too.

This pendant is listed on Etsy, and I sincerely hope that part of my Canada Day Celebrations will be a functioning postal service..http://www.etsy.com/your/listings/73104187
