WEST Summer Promotion: Cloverleaf Art and Fibre

Today in our summer promotion series I'd like to introduce you to a pair of fibre artists - Margaret and Linda from Cloverleaf Art and Fibre.

Cloverleaf Art and Fibre specializes in one-of-a-kind wall hangings and wearable fibre art in many forms.

From the Cloverleaf Art and Fibre profile:

Cloverleaf Art and Fibre is an ever evolving collective project, including an artist, a spinner, and a flock of Shetland sheep.

Linda Glowacki has been a passionate artist from a young age, mostly drawing and painting. Becoming shepherd to a flock of Shetland sheep opened up a whole new artistic medium in fibre and felting. The depth and textures of the natural coloured hand-made felts were an inspiration. When enhanced with needle-felted images, the spirit and substance of each subject are captured with a vibrancy difficult to achieve on canvas alone.

Margaret, the other half owner of the Leafhaven Shetlands flock, lives miles away in the big city, and must content herself with playing with fleece and fabric between visits with the sheep. She does the sewing and linings on the purses, dyes fleece for Linda's needlefelting, occasionally spins, and enjoys combing thrift shops for fabrics, sweaters, blankets and other treasures to recycle into Cloverleaf fibre art projects.

Our flock of Shetland sheep are a source of endless delight and entertainment as well as lovely fleeces in many colours. The two guardian llamas also contribute fibre for felts and yarn.
__________
Check out this needlefelted goody:
Wearable fibre art from our backyard flock of Shetland sheep to your wrist. This is a one of a kind. soft and comfortable felt cuff. The fibre is washed, dyed, carded and felted by us. Linda then applies the needlefelted design.

Joyful dolphins dance through the waves in this image, created in serene shades of aqua, teal and greys.

Shetland fleeces offer a wide range of natural colours, but for this unique cuff we have also dyed white fleece with professional colourfast acid dyes. The cuff is hand washable in lukewarm water with mild soap. Lay flat to dry.

Small to Medium sized: width is about 2 1/2 inches (6 cm); length 7 1/2 inches (19 cm)

The button and elastic closure allows for a flexible fit. With the current button placement and some overlap, the circumference when closed is about 6 inches (15 cm). The button can be moved to change the size. Just let us know if you would like it adjusted before shipping, or set it yourself for a perfect fit.

Do you dream of being outside in your garden or on your bicycle? Do you think of pretty pastel colours? Bold and bright? Soft wedding whites?

Meadow Green Pocket Purse Bees and Daisies Original Needlefelt Design by CloverleafFibreArt

Whatever you think of when you think of spring, use those ideas as inspiration to create something for this new WEST design challenge. The deadline for submissions for this design challenge is April 13.

And if you need a little more inspiration, check out the Pantone fashion color report for Spring 2012.

Here's a quick review of how to play along:
Think about the inspiration topic posted on the blog and in the team forum. As you mull over what that particular idea means to you, jot down some notes in the discussion thread or leave a comment on the blog. Take pictures of your process and finished item and post them in the forum thread. We would love to hear the story behind how you arrived at your finished creation! I will post a round up of all entries at the end of the challenge.

A few notes:
Create something new, especially for the challenge. Entries for each challenge must be finished by the posted deadline. Vintage and supply sellers are welcome to participate too, with a focus on artful photography and careful choice of item.

Happy designing!

W.E.S.T. August Design Challenge - Back To School

I know that we don't want to think about it, but the summer is coming to an end.

Shhhhh....

Thoughts are starting to turn to the busy fall season on Etsy and elsewhere. Our WEST artists have been working hard to get their shops stocked and looking pretty.

Let's not forget about Back To School.

Books, bookbags, school supplies, furniture.... oh so many fun things to think about.

So Back To School is going to be our design challenge for this month.

Here is some inspiration that I hunted down in a few WEST shops already:

What will you design.

Here's how it works. Check the forums and blog at the start of the month to get the inspiration topic. As you mull over what that particular idea means to you, jot down some notes in the discussion thread or leave a comment on the blog. Take pictures of your process and finished item and post them in the forum thread. We would love to hear the story behind how you arrived at your finished object!

I will post a separate feature for each item entered into the design challenge with a round up at the end of the month.

A few notes: Create something especially for the challenge. Entries for each month should be finished by the last day of the month. Vintage and supply sellers are welcome to participate, too, with a focus on artful photography and careful choice of item.
