Customer Service Sunday

Learn how WESTies go the extra mile for you with Customer Service Sunday! This week, we meet up with Emm of Emms Pocketshop

"I welcome the opportunity to create what you need! Don't hesitate to inquire about something you don't see in my shop, whether it's a product or a fabric.
Corina needed a new makeup bag, and it needed to fit her makeup brushes. Her old bag was grimy and her brushes only fit on an angle. We discussed dimensions and fabric options and this bag was made just for her!

Emms Pocketshop purchases come wrapped in recycled tissue, colourful tape and include a personalized handwritten thank you note."

Who's New Tuesday: Emms Pocket Shop

This Tuesday we welcome Emily to the WEST team!  Let's learn a bit about her shop...

Where are you from?
Winnipeg

What is your shop name?
Emms Pocket Shop

When did you start your Etsy shop?
Summer 2011

Why did you decide to start an Etsy shop?
My Pocket Shop is my second shop on Etsy.  I started with a jewelry shop, emms gEM's, and then I decided to add sewing to my portfolio because there are so many great fabrics available.  For me, beads and fabric are a lot alike; You can mix and match textures, patterns and colors!  As a seller and buyer on Etsy for over 4 years, I've seen a lot and have picked up bags of inspiration.

What do you sell?
I sell little bags made from fun and colorful fabrics: reusable snack and sandwich bags, change wallets and coupon keepers.

What is your favorite item to make?
I like to make my zipper pockets because I get to match a zipper to the fabric.  Sounds silly I'm sure, but rifling through my tin of zippers is fun!

Where WESTies Create - Episode 9: emms gEM's and jake + cleo

Welcome to the jewelry studio portion of my home!
I'm Emily of emmsgems and I'm also the shorter half of jake + cleo  and this is where jewelry is made. Last time we met, I took you on a tour of my sewing corner in the basement of my house, where I create my line of fabric bags, emmspocketshop. Now I'm giving you a peak at a room on the main floor of my home, where I design jewelry and my husband hunkers down in our home office.

I should mention that the room actually does triple duty. Under gEM's desk, and somewhat hidden by the rolling cart full of beads, is a cat litter box. I have an older cat who can't climb stairs so I had to find a space for her business on the main floor. This table holds bins, tins and towers of beads. There is always a piece of jewelry on the go in the work area, and is strategically hidden under a towel. It isn't that I fear the paparazzi peeking in the window and snapping pics of my work, but I have a second cat who loves to get her paws in to everything.

I mentioned that I help to create jake + cleo jewelry, and a portion of this room is reserved for this work. A great rolling set of drawers holds jake + cleo 's designing, creating, assembling and shipping needs. We can leave the drawers here, or roll it out to the light filled kitchen and spread out there.

The closet in this room holds a number of things. gEM's necklaces hang on hangers, earrings and bracelets are in boxes. Other boxes hold shipping supplies, display pieces, and extra things. We have two cardboard light boxes and one nylon light cube for photographing product. This mess is an organized mess.

Here are few other photos: a tackle box of beads, the gEM's layout board, and a kiln (hidden in the basement) for firing jake + cleo pieces.

Where Westies Create: Episode 7 Emms Pocket Shop

Come on in to my Pocket Shop studio!

emmspocketshop

Before you reach the tv room in my basement, you can stop off at the ironing board and check out my latest fabric selections for snack bags, zipper coin purses, sandwich wraps and receipt keepers! I am trying to break the habit of leaving things on the ironing board because every once in a while I want to iron my clothes. This little alcove is the perfect size for a 60" x 34" oak desk that I would never let my parents get rid of. And finally, it became mine when I settled in Winnipeg.

Once in Winnipeg the desk saga continued. My husband and I have always thought about getting rid of it - it's big and clunky - that is until I started to sew. I love the pull-out work spaces on each side of the chair. I use the knee drawer for rulers, pins, tape measures, sewing machine feet and chalk.

I have three baskets on top of the desk (and two lint rollers...strange) for in-progress items and the large one with the lid holds my fabric stash. I mostly buy fabric in 1/2 yards and fat quarters (I love variety) so I can hold a lot of inspiration in one basket.

Behind the desk is our family game closet, in which I have overtaken the bottom shelf. These baskets and boxes hold my finished stock, solid colour fabrics, smaller scraps, and templates. The blue dresser (seen in the middle photo) was recently relocated to this area so that I could store liners and interfacing as well as old pairs of jeans that I cut up for change wallets.

Thank you for stopping by. I'll see you again when I share my jewelry studio with you.

W.E.S.T. October Design Challenge: With a Grateful Heart

Now that we are all back into our fall routines, it's time to take a moment to reflect on the things we are thankful for. October brings Thanksgiving to Canadians, and we have so much to be thankful for. This month's design challenge has the theme "With a Grateful Heart."

Thankful. Blessings. Family and Friends. Abundance. Home. Luxuries. Necessities. Turkey.

What comes to mind when you think of thankfulness? You can be as lighthearted or serious as you choose.

To help inspire you and fire up your imagination, here are a few items from WEST designers representing things I'm grateful for, currently for sale on Etsy:

My own private stash of chocolate! And how better to store it than with this snack bag:

My family, how can I ever forget when the population of stuffed animals in our house exceeded that of Winnipeg? (Oh, and I'm thankful we're past that stage!)

Here's how each design challenge works:
Check the forums and blog at the start of the month to get the inspiration topic. As you mull over what that particular idea means to you, jot down some notes in the discussion thread or leave a comment on the blog. Take pictures of your process and finished item and post them in the forum thread. We would love to hear the story behind how you arrived at your finished object! I will post a separate feature for each item entered into the design challenge with a round up at the end of the month.

A few notes:
Create something new, especially for the challenge. Entries for each month should be finished by the last day of the month. Vintage and supply sellers are welcome to participate too, with a focus on artful photography and careful choice of item.

Happy designing!
